A tensile shade structure achieves stability by pre-stressing a membrane fabric in tension. Unlike rigid compression elements such as beams and purlins, this approach relies entirely on the fabric geometry itself for structural stability. The fabric geometry — curved in two directions simultaneously — provides the structural action that resists wind, gravity and other applied loads. In terms of options, high-density polyethylene knitted fabric shade sails come in triangular, square, rectangular and multi-point configurations.
